Learn About Garden Containers for Greenhouses

The typical garden containers for greenhouse gardening come in many different sizes and materials;

Plastic, coconut matting, cardboard, pottery and wooden boxes are all used to start seeds or plants from cuttings and enable them to grow to be planted or sold to gardeners or landscapers.

  • The basic containers are uniform in size, subdivided into smaller parts for the seeds to germinate in after being planted in a mixture where they can sprout easily and begin to grow.

After the first true leaves appear, the plants are often moved into larger containers, usually made out of plastic and measuring four inches square.

Round peat moss planting pots are also used for planting.

  1. These are a good choice for the gardener because they enable him or her to plant the pots in the ground directly where they protect the plant.
  2. Using biodegradable pots like peat moss and matting made from coconut husks allows for less waste in the landfills and improves the soil as it decomposes.

An essential quality for garden containers is that they need to be manufactured from a material that can be handled easily, cleaned or disinfected  and does not cost a lot of money.

  • Plastic is the material chiefly used in planting for greenhouse use because it meets the criteria.
  • The cost of materials is kept at a minimum and the planting containers are usually reused for other plants once the first ones have been removed.
  • Home gardeners can recycle these and save money on materials used for their own home gardens.

Some larger plants need to be kept in sturdier containers, such as those made from heavier plastic or pottery.

  1. Large wooden tubs can be utilized for planting bunches of flowers or vegetables if the garden area is limited.
  2. In many areas, patio gardens are popular and a surprising amount of vegetables can be grown in a small area with container planting techniques.

Unique garden containers can add a great deal of interest to an area by themselves or incorporated into a fountain setting.

  • Garden containers do not need to be the same as all the rest, this is a chance to use your creative gene and make use of the old containers that are taking up space as containers for plants or as trellis supports for climbing plants.
  • Old watering cans or buckets are a favorite for areas that need a touch of whimsy.

In addition to searching the local greenhouse or nursery equipment places, garden containers can be found at flea markets, farmers markets, yard sales and junk sales.

  • Thrift stores may also have containers that can be used for cactus garden containers, which need to be shallower then ordinary containers.
  • When deciding the type of containers to use in the garden or greenhouse, first consider the types of plants that will be utilized.

Seeds need to be planted in garden containers with deeper wells so that the roots can be developed after germination and before planting in a larger garden.

  • A healthy root system and the right kind of nutrition are the keys to healthy plants, whether they are grown in a garden container or inside a row of plants in the ground.
