What is Botox and does it always work?

Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure and it is generally used to improve the appearance of the face and neck area. It is considered an alternative to more invasive cosmetic surgery procedures such as face lifts and eye lid lifts.
Botox can also be used to treat some medical conditions such as excessive sweating and chronic migraines but this is less common. Botox is toxin which is produced naturally by bacteria and is classified as a neurotoxin. When injected into nerves it will prevent them from transmitting their electric impulses and therefore can be used to prevent muscles from contracting. The reason we have frown lines and wrinkles around our eyes (crow’s feet) is because of the contraction of certain muscles within our face. By injecting Botox into the nerves that supply these muscles, these wrinkles can be reduced and our cosmetic appearance improved. Botox is extremely safe and Botox side effects are considered rare.
Botox is extremely effective and works on approximately 99% of people having the procedure. There is however variation as to how well Botox works and the most common reasons for this are as follows:
Bad batch: Occasionally the Botox that is injected is not as effective and this could be as a result of it being a bad batch. This is normally due to problems during sterilisation or issues with storage.
Individual responsiveness: Some people find they do not react as well to Botox and it is thought to be related to how quickly the body naturally metabolises the toxin. For those people who metabolise Botox quickly, the results will be less profound and shorter lasting. Age: Botox has bigger and long lasting effects on younger people compared to older people. As we get older our skin loses its natural elasticity, meaning the effects of Botox are not as noticeable.
Botox immunity: Although this is very rare, some people are found to be completely immune from the effects of Botox. The exact reason for this is not known but it means people will show no effects to Botox injections whatsoever. Correct dosage: If it is the first time you are having Botox injections then your practitioner may not instantly use the optimum concentration of the drug. It normally takes a couple of repeat procedures until the perfect dosage is found for you, which will give you the best results. In summary, Botox is extremely effective at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines but it is important that you understand that the effects are not permanent. On average the effects of Botox will last for around 4 months but this can be as much as 6 months or a little as 2 months.
When calculating Botox prices, you need to take into account the fact that the procedure needs to be repeated to maintain the same results. When choosing your Botox practitioner it is important that you ensure that they have the appropriate qualifications and have considerable experience. This will ensure you have the best chance of getting the results that you desire.
