Joni Stinson, Creek-Cherokee, is a beadweaver, jewelry designer and silversmith.
She graduated from Oklahoma State University and did her dietetic internship at Baylor University Medical Center. She is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian and a Licensed Medical Nutrition Therapist. She is married to Dr. Warren Stinson. They have two sons and three grandchildren.
Joni is winding down her professional career to devote more time to her bead work and sharing her craft with others. She teaches beading at Blue Earth Intertribal. Joni was invited by the United States Department of Interior to participate in their National Park Service's "Artist in Residence" program.  She sells her work at Pow Wows, Craft Shows, Galleries, and on-line.
Joni's designs combine traditional Native American techniques with contemporary elements, colors and materials. Her work is symbolic and exemplifies her passion for her Nation and her art. Joni is an enrolled/registered member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, a United States Recognized Tribe. Her work is made in accordance with the Native American Arts and Crafts Act. Checotah, Oklahoma....home of Carrie Underwood. Currently lives in Omaha, NE

-How did you choose the lovely name for your Shop?
I joined Etsy as a buyer and gave no thought to a name. A year later, I decided to sell and was stuck with it. By the time Etsy allowed for a name change, I felt it was out there and didn't want to change it. I did add a shop name of Ghi-Goo-ie Designs. Ghi-Goo-ie was my great great great great great Grandmother. She was also the Grandmother of the Cherokee Chief at the time of the Trail of Tears, John Ross. Ghi-Goo-ie translates from Cherokee to English as "sweet heart".

Do you sell your products in many places ? tell us some of them ?
I sell my products at regional Pow Wows and festival events. In addition, I have a store on ArtFire..

I love selling on line but my first love is event sales. Nothing beats the ability to interact with the buyer in person.

-How did you find the site who you sell and who it this (name) ? How long have you been selling on this site ?I wanted to purchase a pattern for a bracelet from a local beader. She directed me to Etsy where she had the pattern listed for sale. I joined in 2007 to purchase that pattern. In 2008, I decided to give selling a shot and the rest is history. So, while I have been an Etsy member for 5 years, I have been selling there for 4 years.
I joined the ArtFire selling community in its very beginning as a lifetime charter member.
I began selling on Firstpeople.US about 2 years ago. I was invited by the webmaster for the site to sell there. I was honored and pleased to participate. It has been an excellent example of niche marketing for me.

How has social networking helped your business? What have you found works best for your store? What is working for you to help promote your shop?
I regularly post on FaceBook, less often on Twitter and blog when I have something to say. Keeping my friends and fans aware of my newest or featured items is my plan for using these sites. I am pleased with the results so far but know I haven't used these sites to their fullest potential. I am planning to start Pininterest and/or Wanelo in the near future as well. I also participate daily in site forums.

-How would you describe your style? Have any other artists etc influenced your style?
I do traditional Native American work but often with a contemporary twist as regards color and materials. There are many wonderful beaders who have inspired me but my customers are the most influential in my work. The greatest thrill is to collaborate with them on custom designs that they see in their heads but can not bring to fruition. It pleases me to interpret their dreams in beads.
Specific beaders who have inspired me are Freida Bates, Margie Deeb, Mary Tafoya, Carol Wilcox Wells and Dan Pierce.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I have always been interested in creativity and arts. My Grandmother started me on my journey. To date I have yet to meet another who could inspire and motivate me as she did. She could do it all...sewing, painting, cooking.. crafting of all kinds. She always found time to mentor me though she worked full time and had a house to run. My journey began early and continues!

-How long have you been creating?
I have always created for as long as I can remember. But I began selling my creations in 2008 at the urging of Beulah Tamyo, a Rosebud Sioux friend. Prior to that, I created for my family, friends, and myself only.

-What would your dream job be?
I have my dream job. I continue to work professionally as a Consultant Dietitian in a Long Term Care Facility one day a week and bead 5-6 days per week. It doesn't get better than that at this point in my life.

-What is it that you love so much?
My creative work comes second to my family. I have a supportive husband, two wonderful sons and 3 great grandchldren. They keep me centered, motivated, and inspired.

-What are your main sources of inspiration?
The art of my ancestors and nature are my main source of inspiration. I also attend Indian Market in Santa Fe annually in August. If one can't get inspired there, one can't get inspired any where! Unfortunately, I have more inspiration than time. I keep a sketch book with me at all times. I am forever jotting down notes and making sketches. I have enough sketches for a life time but continue to add more. I think that I must think I will live for 200 years.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?
I am essentially self taught. However, I do belong to a beading club that meets monthly, subscribe to many jewelry making publications and see inspiration wherever I go. I am inspired by the work of others and challenged by my self and my friends.

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?
My greatest selling period during the year is during the Pow Wow season. My son and I work these events together. We start in early April and finish in late September.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?
Most people were not aware of my creative side when it came to making jewelry as I had allowed it lay dormant while I pursued my career as a dietitian and raised a family. They were surprised when I re-invented myself and rejuvenated my love for arts and crafts.

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?
Make what you love. Try new things. Challenge yourself. Be curious and explore the possibilities. Don't give up. Don't let others discourage you.
Listen to your heart...it will guide you. Walk in balance and harmony.

-How has life affected your art and art affected your life?
My life has affected my art as I was born Native American and am proud of my culture. The art of my ancestors has affected my art through its beauty and timeless quality. Preserving, protecting and perpetuating Native American art is the driving force in my creativity.

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?
That is sort of like asking if you have a favorite child! Each item that I make is my favorite for the moment. But if I have to name one, it would probably be the first split loom necklace that I ever made. It is the necklace that I am wearing in the "artist's photo" below.

-What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?
The most memorable reaction was from the Baptist minister who was officiating at my brother's "Wiping of Tears" ceremony last summer.
I was wearing that floral split loom necklace and he said, "Wow, be careful...that necklace is so beautiful I might just steal it!"...I had never heard a minister admit to the desire to steal and said so. We all had a good laugh at a time when laughter was needed.

-Your message for all of us?
Don't become discouraged if you aren't an immediate success selling online. Establishing a following on-line is difficult and takes time. Find your niche and fill it. Research, promote, and create. The time will be well spent and hopefully rewarded.

Care More Creations jewelry is sold primarily through her website and Etsy Shop. However, she has several displays throughout her hometown in PA, current town in AK and Belize where she spends some time in the winter.

-How did you find the site who you sell and who it this (name) ? How long have you been selling on this site ?

A wire supplier suggested to Carolyn that she open a shop in Etsy back in 2008. Since then she has successfully sold her creations there. Just this year she created her own website to include more detailed information about herself, her jewelry, the history of wire wrapping, healing gemstones, a blog and also a link to her Etsy Shop.

-How would you describe your style? Have any other artists etc influenced your style?

Carolyn's love of nature together with her love of fashion has inspired her to create this dramatic line of wire wrapped jewelry. When she started creating wire wrapped pendants, she followed instructions from a couple tutorials and a few books. As time went on she discovered ways to individualize each piece. She started to let the personality of the stone determine everything and developed her own unique style of earthy, unique and dramatic jewelry.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

All my life I have loved to create...since childhood when I discovered that my hands and my heart were my best tools! You name it, I probably attempted to create it.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

How much I love it! I love wire wrapping because it suits my personality. Redundency tends to bore me. Every design that I create is so unique that I never get bored. I find it very rewarding to start with just two key elements: stone and metal, and using just five wire tools,along with my hands and my heart, create unique natural jewelry. I have always been attracted to calming swirls, curves and blending of colors in a natural balance and rhythm. I feel a calmness with the soft side of design vs. the intense boldness of straight lines and angles. Bringing this softness to the hard element of rocks, along with the shiny element of wire brings a passion out in my personality where I can create truly unique pieces of wearable art that are feminine yet dramatic.

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?

There is so much that I have learned over the past 4 years. If you really want to sell your creations online, I would say my best advice is to create a business plan, learn as much as you can about marketing and make sure you are up for the challenge. Because being an artist is a passion, but selling your work is a whole different ballgame, especially if you are on your own with no marketing help. Also, brand yourself from the beginning with a cohesive "feel" throughout your business labels. I wish I would have....the hundreds and hundreds of old ugly business cards I have stored in my closet are proof!

-How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

My lifestyle, including my upbringing and current surroundings is touched by nature. This love of nature has affected my art in the love of natural gemstones. My art in turn has affected my life in so many ways. Since retirement it has motivated me to get up in the morning with anticipation to handcraft a new wire wrapped creation. It has taught me to more outgoing and social in the marketing world, such as craft shows. It has also given me the privilege of being my own boss.

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?

I love so many, but my favorite creations are the more rustic ones using my favorite stone, picasso jasper and favorite wire, gunmetal toned copper.

-What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?

It is always rewarding to acquire new customers through customers. It tells me that my jewelry is being worn, admired and I am given credit for its creation. That is the best compliment.

Last September Care More Creations was invited to join The Artisan Group, which is a prestigious group of like-minded artisans and business owners who collectively gift their handmade products to celebrities through award show gift lounges. I am so excited to be included in The MTV Movie Awards gift lounge presented by GBK Productions in a couple weeks. I use my 14 year old daughter as a sounding board. I don't always agree with her but it is nice to have someone to talk to about ideas.

Keep trying. Keep practicing. Watch what people are really buying not just what you want to make. Then expand off what they are buying carrying a "thread" to the new item.

The biggest thing has been time. Since I have so much down tome it means I can actually work on many things and as a result I have gotten better, more accurate, and learned new techniques.

I will love a particular item --- until my new love comes along. I mostly just love trying new things.

"I promised myself I would only buy something at the craft fair if I truly loved it. And I love your quilt!"

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?
If you are thinking of starting a small online shop I say "go for it!" It is a difficult and long journey and it doesn't magically happen over night. I will tell you though that you will meet some wonderful people and be continually amazed at the talent! I am glad I took the plunge and now can't imagine not doing it!

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?
I think my favorite items are my crocheted jewelry. The chokers are my newest and when I make the bracelets I so enjoy the outcome... although .. crocheting with wire can be a bit painful sometimes.. the results are worth it!

I am a former Police Dispatcher who found herself transplanted to Alaska when the Army transferred my husband to Fairbanks. I spent 6 years there working as a Dispatcher for the North Star Borough. After my husband exited the Army we decided to return to Texas so we could be close to our families and our grandchildren, who are the light of my life!
Once we returned I was thinking of going back to work in my field of Dispatch but my Mom needed care so we moved her in with us. Mom's care is mainly just being with her and helping her with meals and medication. I began to get really bored.
I decided I would make new curtains for the kitchen so my husband bought me a new sewing machine and curtains were done. So I thought maybe I will try to make a tote bag, now mind you I hadn't sewed since High School and that was a long time ago. After the bag was done Bags By Hags was born!
So here I am today sewing bags and aprons, and home accessories. On the road to my Handmade Dream!

I like Western, rustic, primitive items, but I try to branch out in my creating to all things, I want my items to be unique and not mass produced.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I have always loved to create things, I loved watching my grandmother sew, I remember sitting beside her at the sewing machine and being the keeper of the pin cushion. I think this is where it all began.

-How long have you been creating?
I have been sewing my items for almost a year now. Though I have always done some sort of creating/making things.

-What is it that you love so much?
I love to select the fabric patterns for my projects, I also love laying it out on my table and actually designing most of my things myself. I very rarely work from a store bought pattern.

Items that I believe will serve a purpose give me inspiration, my Faith inspires most things though.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?
I am a self taught sewer, of course as I mentioned my Grandmother was my earliest mentor, and I did have a great mentor when I took a Boot Camp for my business that I actually just finished. She was awesome and it has really helped me!

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?Of course Christmas is the big one for everyone, while January and February where a bit slow, April and May seem to be picking up, hoping to see it continue through the summer!

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?
That I don't work off a store bought pattern.

Take one step at a time, keep on doing what you love, and NEVER give up on your dream!

Art has affected my life by being introduced to so many new people that are now my friends, it has boosted the inner me and helped me discover who I am.

My favorite items to make are my Bible Covers, I really love everyone and each one is unique. I also just recently started making Prayer Quilts and I love those as well. Faith is very important to me.

There is something special about things made by human hands that cannot be duplicated by machines. A little bit of the soul of the person who creates something becomes part of the object created. That is what is so unique and wonderful about handmade.
Everything I make is inspired by nature so this is a recurring theme in my work. I try to design each piece of jewelry as if it were the only one I ever made. Each item is unique and one of a kind although at times, a similar theme will repeat itself just like in nature.
When I am not creating jewelry, I am taking photos, drawing animals and nature, crocheting something, making anything creative, playing my guitar, playing taiko drums or gardening.
There are just so many wonderful things to do. One never stops learning!

I think of my style as ethnic, chic, bohemian, tribal and often rustic. Many artists inspire me. My first wire work dvd was by Sharilyn Miller.

I was born a creative person. I started drawing and painting as a child. Later I explored fiber arts like crochet, sewing and embroidery. I taught myself calligraphy and lettering (before computers), how to read music and play classical guitar and numerous other creative arts.

-How long have you been creating?
Since I was a very young child. Creativity is something you're born with. You either nourish it or let it fade away.

-What is it that you love so much?
I love to create. I love all things made by hand, not machines. I love folk arts, nature, animals and nusic.

-What are your main sources of inspiration?
Nature is my main source of inspiration. Trees, flowers, plants, birds, oceans, mountains are all I need to feel inspired.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?
Although I am always looking at the wonderful works of other artists, I am completely self taught. I do have a collection of books which sometimes help ignite a creative spark when I'm feeling stuck. I have taught myself everything I presently know in many fields from jewelry making to studying natural health (I have a BS in Natural Health/Herbal Studies).

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?I sell more at shows than online and most of these are seasonal staring in early Spring. Other than that, I don't have any particular time of year that is more profitable than another.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?
I doubt many people realize how much thought goes into the creative process. I can't simply find a pattern and duplicate it. I don't even duplicate my own work. Each piece sort of evolves and grows. A seemingly simple design may have taken days to manifest. It may have started as just a feeling. I keep a sketch pad handy to capture fleeting bits of inspiration and ideas and refer to it often.

I think any new artisan needs to explore what they truly love and find a way to depict it. Learning anything is so much easier today.

Art has always been part of my life. The big difference now, is that I have more time to devote to it. I'm no longer working for someone else doing something I don't like 9-5:00 and wishing I were doing something creative instead. Now, my day revolves around MY art. I'm so glad I retired early!!

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?
I have several favorite items I've made but I'd have to say that perfecting my little bird's nests jewelry is number one.

-What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?The best, most rewarding reaction I receive from one of my pieces is having someone tell me how unique it is and that they've never seen anything like it. I love hearing that because it means I've succeeded at incorporating a piece of myself in my creation.

I am really a deeply spiritual person in an unorthodox way and my creativity springs from a source that I believe we are all linked to.

Experimenting my Whole Life- Margaret Katherine Dempsey

I'm Maggie!
After living on both coasts of this country and lots of cities and towns in between, I've settled down and currently live on Martha's Vineyard with my boyfriend of three years and two amazingly cute ginger kitties named Charlie and Butters.
I'm obsessed with crafting, videogames and Harry Potter... No, really! :) I love to craft and make things with my hands.

Beach plums, or Prunus maritima, are a native plant to the island. Their signature blossoms line the toe paths to our beaches and shores. Native Americans and locals have been gathering beach plums for centuries. I love the scenic, rustic splendor of the island - and the simple, fragrant, floral beach plum was my inspiration for this shop.

Etsy is my first shop ever! I would like to find some boutiques who like my items and sell there.

-How did you find the site who you sell and who it this (name) ? How long have you been selling on this site ?

I heard about this via the On Fire for Handmade Team on Etsy! They are wonderful, motivated, talented Etsy artisans, I love their work and when they suggested that I submit my shop here, I jumped at the chance!

-How would you describe your style? Have any other artists etc influenced your style?

My style is very soft, whimsical, feminine and floral. I draw inspiration from the beautiful place where I live - Martha's Vineyard.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

I've always been an artist at heart. I was a natural musician and by the age of 15, I was able to play 8 different instruments. I loved theatre, live music and the arts. I was very much a typical geeky art kid in high school.

-How long have you been creating?

I've been learning and experimenting my whole life. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, and I never put that away. I started to make hemp and bamboo beaded jewelry when I was in junior high, and loved that too.
While I had to put some of these things away while I was in college and working my first few jobs, now that I have lots of free time and the peace and quiet of the island, I find its just a natural flow of creativity. It's ceaseless.

-What is it that you love so much?

Some things just get inside you, and give you such intense satisfaction upon completion that you never want to stop. With each new piece of jewelry or new headband I create, I feel such joy in thinking of who might put this to use, or who might truly love it. The act of creation, and sharing it with others is really wonderful.

-What are your main sources of inspiration?

This place is so quiet and full of life. Deer roam across the meadow in my yard each evening, and the birds sing me awake each morning. There are so many flowers, trees and plants, so many colors in the sky and sea, in the sand and in the surf, I can't help but feel moved to create.
Whether it is a sunset over the ocean, or spring flowers coming up in the fields, there is always some gorgeous, natural feat to be amazed and inspired by.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?

My grandma and the internet have a lot to do with my success. I had a hard time learning from books, but between some real life tutelage from my loving grandmother, and seeing videos of people ACTUALLY doing beadweaving and crochet - rather than attempting to interperet it from diagrams in dusty old pattern books, it just clicked for me. -Do you sell more at one time of year than others?

Holidays and cold weather are my best selling times. People love to buy scarves and headbands and hats for themselves and for others especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

The pure joy and love that I put into each stroke. I never make something just to sell - everything I do is inspired and made with care.
Because this isn't my "job" - it is my hobby and my labor of love - I don't feel as though it is work. Therefore everything I create is fun, new and exciting. Some of the things I make I end up very tempted to keep for myself, because I like it so much! Sometimes I do, but most often I leave it up in my shop, so I can share this joy with others.

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?

Patience and practice!
Make sure you are practicing the correct way, too! Practice does not make perfect - practice makes PERMANENT. Make sure you always doing your best.

My style is an eclectic mix of anything I can get my hands on. My favorite pieces are my beaded and charm bracelets.

Everything started 4 years ago when I wanted a charm for my cell phone. I looked around and saw all kinds of designs, yet they were mostly child like and not at all what I had in mind.
I decided to try making my own. I went to one of the local bead supply stores and fell in love with all the gemstones, beads, and thousands of charms they had.
I believe I spent too much that day, but I made one amazing cell phone charm.
From there, I wanted to add something on my purse. I had seen a simple zipper purse pull and decided why not make it a little larger and add a little "Bling". This is how my Purskey Line was created.

-How long have you been creating?

-What is it that you love so much?

I love making an original design people will love. I strive to create quality pieces each with their own personality.
I am one of those designers that the piece I am working on has to "speak to me"!

-What are your main sources of inspiration?

I find all sorts of inspiration through the many talented Artists I have become acquainted with over the years.
Sometimes, just seeing a pretty flower will help, and anything PURPLE of course.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?

I am self taught for the most part however I have asked other artists how they wrap this, where they buy that, what is the best quality wire, etc....
I also love finding tutorials and classes where I can learn new techniques I can then incorporate into my designs.

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?

I really can not answer that question. I have not sold enough to find a pattern at this time.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

When I am stuck on a design or how to implement what I see in my head, I go to You Tube and watch "Doctor Who" video clips......hahaha

I have several. I really loved my "Hummingbird Garden" Charm Bracelet, and my "Theater Night" Charm Bracelet.

I wanted a shop name that was creative, fun, short and simple to make it easy to remember. So I tweaked a word that most closely represented the unique style of my art to give birth to "Diviniteez!".

I found Etsy.com through a jewelry supply vendor originally (Vintaj Natural Brass). I opened up my first shop in May 2009 and two more shops last year.

-How would you describe your style? Have any other artists etc influenced your style?

I have a moon in Gemini so "one style" is not natural for me... hence more than one jewelry shop. Yet the consistent theme across everything I do is energy work. At Diviniteez! you will find handcrafted, luxurious designs that are "energized" with positive qualities of consciousness making each design a true "Diviniteez!". I have been an energy worker for almost 30 years. So the creative process for me is about being divine, about being conscious with my intention for each creation. Each piece is unique either as a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) design and/or in the energy that I draw during the creative process. My grandmother (and my creative sisters) influenced me most as a young girl.

- How did you first come to art and creativity? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?

I started quite young designing Christian Dior suits, etc. for my Barbie Dolls! I wore my own handmade clothes. I was a seamstress for a while, then a porcelain doll maker, and now a jewelry artist. I will start making dolls again when I have more time at home.

-How long have you been creating?

Since I was a child.

-What is it that you love so much?

I love color, textures, mixing metals, fibers; the glint of a gemstone, the lustrous glow of silver or polished brass; watching the effects of a torch on metals and surfaces and then finally seeing a piece come together. Mostly I love the energy of spirit that I feel when I am "into my work".

-What are your main sources of inspiration?

Nature, magazines, historic or ancient architecture, antiques, the works of the masters - Micheangelo, Botticelli to name a few, Italian and Chinese silks, an inspiring book or touching story; meditation and reflection.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?

Kieu Pham Gray of Bead Q! in Chagrin Falls, Ohio has been an incredible mentor in both skill building as well as running a jewelry business. I've also received excellent training and mentoring from Sands Company Jewelers in Richmond Heights, Ohio.

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?

Generally around the holiday season starting in October.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

The energy work I used to draw positive thought into a design.

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?

Write at least a visualization for what your business will look like when it is fully running. This draws energy for your business.

-How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

I grew up with creative people ... art has also proven to be therapeutic for me when I am going through a stressful period in my life. I create based on my experience and then through creating I have more experience to create from.

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?

Several but my Mookaite Celebrating Change necklace is one of my favorites... both challenging and the stones were so beautiful.

-What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?

I had a rush order from a customer to ship to her sister as a gift. I took a lot of extra time with the packaging because it was a gift. Her feedback to me was that this was the best online purchasing experience she ever had. Those kinds of comments let you know that you have really reached a customer which is a little trickier over the internet.

I have always loved working with my hands. I used to watch my grandmother make beaded ornaments and my mother was always cross stitching. I find it hard to sit still. Even when watching a movie or relaxing on the couch, I love to keep my hands busy creating things.

I have been creating items in some shape or form for as long as I can remember. I have been specifically creating jewelry for about 3 years.

-What is it that you love so much?

I love the entire process! I love purchasing beads, I love sitting down and playing with them until a design forms, and I love stringing or wrapping it all together to make a beautiful jewel.

-What are your main sources of inspiration?

I gain inspiration everywhere. It may be a jewelry magazine, it may be the design on a dress, or may be as simple as the colors in nature.

I am self taught.

I find that people feel the need to search for beauty all times of the year.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

I don't think that most people realize that artists sometimes get stuck creatively. When this happens, I don't get frustrated. I wait it out as I know inspiration and creativity will eventually begin to flow again.
Also, music is a big help when creating! I love to sing loud and off key while creating!

Do what you love! If you love it, it will not feel like work. Focus on something that brings you happiness and inner peace while you are creating!

Art has affected my life in the joy I see on a customer's face or the great feedback I receive when they purchase one of my pieces. My art makes me feel happy and when others find happiness in it as well, that is very rewarding.

Oh, that's a hard question! I tend to love everything I make! I did have a hard time offering the below piece for sale. I wanted it for myself! I rarely, rarely duplicate any of my pieces so it was hard to offer it.

I love the zen-like focus it takes to create a handbag - Glenda Ganis

Glenda Ganis :
I have been a Screenwriter and Production Designer most of my adult life. Designing handbags felt like a natural extension of who I was creatively.
I've had no formal training but that has never stopped me from pursuing a vision, whether it's the creation of a handbag or a film set. I love using my intuitive skills and appreciate the intricacies of design in all forms.

I use high quality leather, design my own patterns and hand whip-stitch or saddle stitch the finished product.
The collection is one-of-a-kind. It can take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours to make one style. It requires a Zen-like focus and is labor intensive.
My goal is to create designs that are chic, functional and classic with a modern twist. All handbags are signed and made in my Los Angeles studio.

I've been creating art since I was old enough to hold a crayon. I can not remember a time when I wasn't creating something, whether it was writing or making dolls clothing or creating food out of clay, creativity has been an integral part of my life.

My entire life.

-What is it that you love so much?

I love the zen-like focus it takes to create a handbag. The hours pass so quickly I barely notice the time. I feel as though I'm compelled to create by some magical force greater than me.

-What are your main sources of inspiration?

Sometimes music, other times the shape of an object or the smooth feel of a piece of leather. Occasionally, I'll create a handbag in a dream state and attempt to sketch it when I awaken. My sketches are pathetic. I'm much more a doer from scratch.

-Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?

Self taught. I admire Henry Beguelin's hand crafted handbags and shoes.

-Do you sell more at one time of year than others?

It varies, and never when I expect the sales to happen.

-What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don't know?

The amount of time that goes into crafting a handbag from pattern to finish is incalculable. If I were to charge for the actual time I expend the cost would be seriously high.

Have some tips and advices for new artisians ?
Trust your gut instincts and don't be afraid to fail. I learn more from my failures than I do from my successes.

-How has life affected your art and art affected your life?

They are inseparable. If I'm in the mood to write, then I'm not in the mood to make a handbag and vice versa. I never want to be doing one when I'm doing the other. I think that would be very frustrating.

-Do you have a favorite item you have made?

I fall in love with most of my designs. Fortunately, I rarely sell my first samples so I use them to determine how well they wear and if the pattern needs to be adjusted.

-What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?

I've received emails with loving praise. Those emails mean a lot to me because I've shared my joy and at the same time made someone very happy.
